Paintings of the Late Ming Dynasty (晚明绘画作品展)
“Late Ming Dynasty” refers to the period from Wanli to Chongzhen reigns (1573-1644), when the Chinese painting gained remarkable achievements.

When “Wumen School” outshone others during the middle Ming Dynasty, the art circle in later times of the same dynasty featured the coexistence of various regional painting schools. In this period, some changes were made in “Wumen School” on the basis of its painting traditions; “Songjiang School” rapidly rose for its literati paintings; “Wulin School” organically combined the style of literati painting and professional brushwork, that made the paintings then be appeal to both refined and popular taste hence attracted much attention.

It is even more notable that the late Ming paintings of landscape, flower-bird and figure evolved side by side. For instance, Dong Qichang’s study on painting theory and practices led to another historical top of literati landscape painting, Xu Wei initiated the vigorous freehand style flowers painting with simple and frank expression, and the exaggerate figures under Chen Hongshou’s brush boasted something exactly fresh and new of unworldly artistic connotation. The painters at that time with the above three as their representatives jointly moulded the diversified painting art of the late Ming Dynasty and exerted profound influence over the Chinese painting of later dynasty and even the modern time.

For the past few years, Tianjin Museum has curated several original exhibitions, managing to give a general introduction of the main regional painting schools of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Distinctively from the earlier ones, this exhibition, focusing on the timeline of “Late Ming Dynasty”, selects exhibits from the museum’s rich collections and sorts them into three subjects of landscape, flower-bird and figure, in hope of profiling the features of the paintings of the time.

Many thanks to Palace Museum who gives great support to the exhibition.
