    元代是蒙古族统治的朝代。在中原传统文化和宋、辽、金文化的影响下，对传统的制玉制度和琢玉工艺十分推崇，他们仿效宋代官办玉制度，并用现有的制玉技术，设置了专门督办制玉机构。元代墓葬出土的玉器不多，以安徽安庆范文虎夫妇合葬墓和江苏无锡钱裕墓、苏州张士城父母墓中出土的玉器为代表。出土玉器种类有：带钩、带板、杯、匜、尊等。
  元代器皿型玉器虽较多，但玉壶却极为罕见。天津博物馆馆藏这件元代翼龙纹双耳玉壶，高15.5厘米，宽12.4厘米，口径5.9厘米，底径5.3厘米，由青玉雕琢而成。玉壶呈椭圆体，器表面有褐色斑缕。直口、壶颈的两侧有云纹半环耳，口颈部浅浮雕连瓣和草叶纹，腹部浮雕翼龙、海水。翼龙首上有鹿形角，飘长鬣，张大口，上唇长尖而下卷，身有鳞纹和鸟形翼，舞三爪足，鱼形分枝尾，尾后有火珠，龙身下有海水波涛翻卷。玉匠采用浮雕兼阴线刻技法，把翼龙卷曲飞舞的姿态、海浪翻卷的气势，琢刻得惟妙惟肖。壶身的下部雕饰莲花瓣纹，壶底部琢成椭圆圈足。此玉壶通体琢制六层纹饰，雕缋满眼，纹饰总体布局叠罗渐递，层次分明，和元青花瓷器纹饰的结构排列相似，这是元代造型艺术形式的一大特点。此器造型端正，纹饰茂美，刀法劲放，典雅高贵，迄今尚未见到能与此相比肩作品，实属元代宫廷享用玉器中的珍品。

Made of green jade with seams of brown, this hu has a flat oval shape, a straight mouth, and half hoop handles. The belly is carved with a winged dragon in light relief. The dragon’s head is long and thin, with a long snout raised upwards and a gaping mouth. It has a rounded body and three claws and is imposingly majestic, with a strong sense of movement and three-dimensional appearance. The dragon is depicted above the sea, while the lower register is decorated with lotus petal pattern. The rugged beauty of this piece is archetypal of the Yuan dynasty style of jade carving.
